An aged stone bridge watches over the Lester River. Stacy Dorn

The path from the parking area leads to Lester Falls through a scenic woods of huge pines, with the river as hiking partner. There is also a small turnout just before the entrance to the golf course on Lester River Road. Check out a great view of the crest of this waterfall from the trail high above the falls, or follow the post-and-cable railing to a rustic path down to the water’s level for a closer look. The path descends rugged stone steps to the river’s edge and an open “beach” of small river rock. Do you hear thunder? Indeed, Lester Falls announces itself before you see it, and just a short way along the river you are treated to a dead-ahead view of this spectacular cataract. Lester is a commanding falls in a steep section of the gorge, with a sheer wall at the top where the river splits a wedge into a chute of rapids and explodes with aplomb over the crest to the main 30-foot plunge. The river sails past the ragged, jagged black rock cliff to a large, deep pool of root beer–colored water and falls again over a couple of smaller plunges downstream. This is another secluded place with nary a soul in sight.
